I am the chief adventurer and owner of KMS Outdoors whose main mission is to get you to spend more time outside.

“The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation.” ~Mark Twain

I attached that quote to the refrigerator in every kitchen of every home I have ever lived in since I graduated from Boston College fifteen years ago. It has never been more apt as I transition from Chief Financial Officer, Public Accounting Firm to Outdoor Adventure Professional, Independent Business Owner. I spent the first thirteen years of my career working in audit, accounting, and finance roles in public accounting firms and mutual fund companies in the U.S. and Canada. In 2012 I took a leap of faith, left my CFO role, and enrolled in the Outdoor Adventure Naturalist program at Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley, based in Pembroke, Ontario. I’ve discovered a love for canoeing, kayaking, and backcountry travel in all seasons and this is how KMS Outdoors has come to pass. I want to inspire individuals to get out and take advantage of what the outdoors has to offer them.

I have spent most of my life in either Ithaca, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, or my current location Toronto, Ontario. I married a decidedly urban Canadian in 2009 and our divergent interests cause much mirth and merriment amongst friends and family. While making my vacation my vocation happily takes up most of my time, in my spare time I read, run, bake, and care for a spunky little Wheaten Terrier.

What can you find at KMS Outdoors?

I structure my blog posts around four main topics: career change as you’ll see I’ve undergone a significant one, outdoor adventures from how-to to travel tales, and travel stories from my more urban pursuits because life is all about balance. My goal is to aid and inspire people to spend more time outside, because hey, we all need a little more nature in our lives. I am also working on a book about my career change and share many thoughts about the writing process.

I may occasionally diverge from those topics but only if I think the information will be relevant to you.

I post here at least once a week. To make sure you always have my latest posts, you can subscribe via RSS or e-mail.
