Video: Ice Out

We arrived in Red Lake, Ontario in mid-May before ice out in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park. On an overcast Saturday morning we flew by float plane into the park and began our journey across Olive Lake, picking our route carefully around large patches ice. After about an hour we found ourselves iced in – in the middle of the lake – as the wind caused ice floes to surround our canoe. The Northwoodsman spent 10 minutes chipping us out with his kayak paddle and we made for the first available island to wait out the conditions. It took the afternoon for the wind to blow away the ice that had candled and we were on our way the next morning.
