Trip Report: Winter Camping at Mew Lake – 2016 Edition

Early in December I received an e-mail from a friend looking to organize a women’s winter camping trip in January for Mew Lake or Frontenac Provincial Park. Lyn had the four-person Snowtrekker tent, the stove, and the sleds to hike in. We only needed to bring food and our own personal gear to round out the rest.

 

We ended up with a mixed group on the coldest weekend in February and had a blast.

Winter Mindfulness at Arrowhead Provincial Park

Ninja-like I was not: the waxless cross-country skis I rented from the park office hummed along as I gained steam down the hill. Combined with the mindless nattering of my inner dialogue, I couldn’t hear anything else.  When I reached the crest of the next hill I stopped and listened. A light breeze whispered through evergreens. A downy woodpecker knocked insistently. Saturday morning traffic droned on Highway 11. My friends’ laughter carried back to me, urging me to catch up.
