What is Summer?

Summer is a hot day on a lake in northern Ontario – the near north, for all of you true northern Ontarians.

Thick air skips off damp skin, damp from a refreshing swim in cobalt blue waters after lunch. We climb back into the canoe and paddle along the pink granite shoreline. Smooth sassafras paddle in hand, dipping gently into the lake, loons calling to one another, flying ahead of us one hundred meters at a time. Sunscreen stings my eyes and tickles my nose, battling it out with Deep Woods OFF for what I’ll still smell as I fall asleep under the Milky Way.
